Sweaty Palms? Here’s How Botox Can Help

Everyone gets sweaty palms now and then, usually in response to anxiety. For some people, however, sweaty palms are a constant problem, and the level of sweat can be extreme. If you’re one of those people dealing with excessively sweaty palms, you’ll be relieved to know that Botox can dramatically improve your symptoms and help you feel more confident. In as little as two weeks after Botox, you will be able to approach that big meeting or job interview without worrying about keeping your palms dry for a handshake. Here is what you need to know about treating sweaty palms with Botox.

What causes excessive palm sweating?

Most people who have excessively sweaty palms have a condition called hyperhidrosis. With hyperhidrosis, your sweat glands are overstimulated, causing them to release more and more sweat. Typically, people with hyperhidrosis experience excessive sweat in one or two areas of the body, rather than a generalized kind of excessive sweating. The palms are a common culprit. People with hyperhidrosis that affects their palms not only dread handshakes but also may struggle to do things like play musical instruments or even hold a steering wheel securely when driving.

How does Botox help?

When Botox is injected into the palms, it blocks the chemical that stimulates sweat production from the sweat glands. The excessive sweating typically clears up in as little as two weeks, with about 90% of patients achieving full relief. Unlike other treatments for hyperhidrosis, Botox allows for targeted therapy, so you don’t experience unwanted dryness in other parts of the body just to ease your palm sweating.

What should I expect during treatment?

Your provider will determine how many injections you need in each palm to get the best results. The injections only go just under the surface of the skin, and your provider can use a local numbing agent to make the treatment more comfortable. Although Botox lasts for several months, you may need periodic treatments to maintain your results.
