Preparing for a Successful Mastopexy Procedure

Preparing for a Successful Mastopexy Procedure

A mastopexy—also called a breast lift—is performed when patients are generally satisfied with the size of their breasts but not their position. Your plastic surgeon may recommend a mastopexy if you are concerned about sagging breasts or having nipples that point downward. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and most patients go home with a few hours of their procedure. You can increase the chances of a fast recovery without complications by preparing carefully for your surgery. Before your mastopexy, follow this preparation advice.

Quit Smoking
Smoking increases the risk of complications during and after surgery. Your plastic surgeon may ask you to quit for at least three weeks before your procedure, to reduce the risk of wound healing problems. Smoking decreases blood flow to the tissues and it impedes wound healing. If quitting is difficult, speak to your doctor about techniques that can help. Be honest with your surgeon about smoking, as your procedure may need to be modified for your safety if you do smoke.

Attend Your Pre-Operative Consultation
Before your procedure, your plastic surgeon will review everything with you during your pre-operative consultation. He or she make recommendations to stop or change the way you take certain medications in the run-up to your procedure. He or she will also give you instructions for the day of your surgery, including when you need to avoid eating and drinking. During this consultation, you will receive prescriptions for medications that you will need after surgery. Get them filled before your procedure so you have them with you need them. Bring any remaining questions you have to the pre-operative appointment to ensure all of your questions and concerns are addressed before surgery.

Arrange for Assistance
You will need someone to take you to the surgery center and drive you home after your procedure. You will also need someone to stay with you for at least 24 hours after surgery. Make these arrangements before your surgery so you can focus on your recovery.

At Maloney Plastic Surgery, we will guide you through the entire process, from planning for your surgery to assisting you through a smooth recovery period. Schedule a consultation with our plastic surgeon in Tucson today to see if a mastopexy is right for you by calling (520) 298-2330.
