What is Blepharoplasty and when is it recommended?

What is blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes dropping skin, bagginess, and puffiness around the eyes. Dr. Maloney can perform upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, or both to enhance the ‘openness’ of your eyes and make them look less tired and more youthful.

When is Blepharoplasty used

A blepharoplasty can address a loss of elasticity in the skin around your eyes and improve your appearance and your field of vision. We might recommend a blepharoplasty procedure to you if you have:

  • Drooping skin around your upper or lower eyelids.
  • Sagging skin or baggy skin around your eyes.
  • Loss of elasticity around the skin around your eyes.
  • Trouble seeing due to sagging upper eyelids.
  • Smoother or tighter skin around the eyes.

How Long Does a Blepharoplasty Last?

A blepharoplasty does not prevent future aging, but the results of the procedure can last between 7–10 years or your entire lifetime.

Benefits and Risks of Blepharoplasty Surgery

Benefits of blepharoplasty

When you come in for your consultation, we will go over the risks and benefits of a blepharoplasty procedure. The biggest benefits of a blepharoplasty are:

  • Improved confidence and self-esteem.
  • Enhanced field of vision.
  • More youthful and rested appearance.
  • Simple, safe procedure with minimal scarring, pain, or downtime.
  • Dramatic results that last for years or your entire lifetime.

Risks of blepharoplasty

Like any surgical procedure, a blepharoplasty does have risks. The most common complications associated with blepharoplasty surgery are:

  • Infection.
  • Dry eyes.
  • Bleeding.
  • Discoloration of the eyelids.
  • Scarring.
  • Trouble closing your eyes.
  • Drooping lower eyelash line.
  • Abnormal folding of eyelid skin.

What to Expect from Our Blepharoplasty Consultation

During your initial consultation, we will discuss your goals and expectations for cosmetic surgery. We want to give you as much information as possible so that you can make an informed decision about undergoing a blepharoplasty procedure.

Like any surgical procedure, a blepharoplasty does have risks. We want to make sure that you have realistic expectations about the results of cosmetic surgery, and that you understand the risks, benefits, and limitations of blepharoplasty procedures. We will answer any questions you have and inform you of the benefits and risks of blepharoplasty surgery. We will also recommend alternative or complementary cosmetic surgery procedures that can further enhance your self-esteem and confidence. A blepharoplasty can remove sagging or drooping skin around your upper and lower eyelids, remove or reposition fat deposits, and reduce bagginess under or around the eyes, but it cannot:

  • Reduce or eliminate dark circles under your eyes.
  • Treat or eliminate crow’s feet.
  • Reduce fine lines or deep facial wrinkles.
  • Replace volume loss or fill in hollows around the eyes.
  • Lift cheeks.

We can recommend other cosmetic procedures that address those issues, and in some cases, we can perform those procedures at the same time that we perform an upper or lower blepharoplasty. Dr. Maloney will discuss details of the operation, show you before and after photos, and answer any questions you may have.

Our patient coordinator will then review surgical fees, financing options and answer additional questions. If you choose to have surgery with us, you will return for another consultation about three weeks prior to your operation. At this appointment, Dr. Maloney will review the surgical plan with you in greater detail, and you will both sign the surgical consent forms. An experienced member of our team will take your pre-operative photographs, give you your prescriptions and will review all your surgical instructions. When you leave this pre-operative appointment, you will be fully prepared for your procedure.

Preparation

We will give you specific instructions for preparing for your blepharoplasty surgery. We will recommend that you have someone drive you to and from your surgery, and that you arrive with a clean face free of makeup, lotions, serums, gels, perfumes, or other products. You should wear comfortable clothes that are easy to get on and off, like sweatpants and a shirt that zips or buttons up in the front. You should not wear any jewelry.

We recommend that you quit smoking before any cosmetic surgery, because smoking can affect your healing and recovery times and increase your risk of complications. We will also ask you to stop taking anti-inflammatory medications, blood thinners, multivitamins, and herbal supplements before the procedure as they can increase your risk of bleeding.

Recovery

Most people need one to three weeks of recovery time after a blepharoplasty procedure. During that time, your eyes will be swollen, bruised, and puffy and may ooze fluid from the sutures. We recommend that you take time off work and avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity while you recover. Everyone is different, and your individual recovery time may depend on your age, overall health, lifestyle, and commitment to our aftercare instructions.
