Do You Know the Difference Between Botox and Fillers? Here’s What You Need to Know

Botox and dermal fillers are both injectable treatments used to address issues of skin aging. Many people talk about Botox and fillers interchangeably, but they are actually different products that work differently and target different issues. When you schedule an appointment at our medi spa, the first step in your visit will be a consultation in which one of our specialists helps you choose the best treatment options for achieving the outcomes you want. Here is what you need to know about the differences between Botox and fillers, so you have a better understanding of what you can expect from each.

Botox

Botox is an injectable, but it is not a filler. It contains a safe preparation of a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin that improves the appearance of wrinkles by temporarily weakening—or in some cases, paralyzing—the muscles beneath them. For this reason, Botox is recommended for treating dynamic wrinkles. These are the kinds of wrinkles that are not prominent when your face is still but appear when you make movements, such as frowning, smiling, squinting your eyes, or furrowing your brows. For this reason, Botox is typically used to treat crow’s feet, the so-called “11s” between the brows, and frown lines. Botox also has a number of non-cosmetic uses, including treating chronic migraines, teeth grinding, and hyperhidrosis.

Fillers

Fillers are injectables that are used to plump the skin in the areas in which wrinkles are visible, in order to make the skin look smoother. They can also be used for contouring and to replace lost skin volume. The most popular fillers are made of hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxyapatite. When fillers are used to treat wrinkles, they are typically used on static wrinkles, or wrinkles that are visible regardless of face movement. Fillers are also popularly used to add volume to the lips and contour the cheeks and chin.

Both Botox and fillers can play important roles in helping you achieve a more youthful complexion, so let the medi spa team at Maloney Plastic Surgery help you design a treatment plan to achieve the best possible results.
