Comparing Superficial and Medium Depth Chemical Peels

Comparing Superficial and Medium Depth Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are effective at reversing the signs of aging, scars, and other skin imperfections without surgery. They are available in different strengths, so they can be tailored to correct your skin’s needs and skin type. The strength of a chemical peel is determined by the depth of penetration it provides. Superficial and medium-depth are two types of peels that your provider may discuss with you. Here is what you need to know about the differences.

Superficial Peels

Superficial peels are the least invasive kind in terms of depth of treatment. These treatments can reach any level from the epidermis to the stratum basale. Superficial peels are usually recommended for very minor skin discolorations and aging, since they are essentially a surface treatment. Because superficial peels don’t reach a deep layer of skin, they have very few side effects and require little if any downtime. These kinds of peels are often recommended for young adults with healthy skin or older people who have sensitive skin and cannot tolerate a strong treatment. After treatment, most people can resume their normal activities, but they will need to wear a sunscreen and avoid prolonged sun exposure as their skin heals.

Medium-Depth Peels

Medium-depth peels are more intensive than superficial peels. They reach beyond the levels of the skin treated with superficial peels, down to the papillary dermis. They are highly effective at reducing the signs of aging, refreshing dry and dull skin, and reducing the appearance of skin discolorations. After treatment, your skin may feel like it is sunburned, and within a few days, it will peel for four to five days. After the peeling has stopped, you will be able to see the refreshed appearance of your treated skin.
